Cosplay: The Art of Dressing Up

Interview with BreeSanpai

For most people, unless you are a child or it is Halloween, you normally do not wear a costume but we are all not the same. If you are a cosplayer than everyday is a day to dress up! Cosplay is “the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga and anime”, per dictionary.com. Cosplay is a whole new art form; it allows people to design costumes and play their favorite fandoms. It takes creativity and a lot of self-esteem. I personally have always wanted to be a cosplayer but I just do not have the self confidence yet, but I am working on that.

I really wanted to start cosplaying but I didn’t know where to start, how to start, or what to do? All of these questions and no one to ask so I thought to myself “I must not be the only one to feel this way.” I have been fortunate to know a few experienced cosplayers but if I wanted to start this journey, I needed to interview one that is still new to the game and could give advice to anyone who was looking to start out so I asked a friend that is still new to her cosplay journey. I have been following BreeSanpai since she started out, but she was my friend way before. I knew she loved Anime and drawing but I did not know she wanted to cosplay. The first time I saw her cosplay on FB, I was so impressed. She was so cute or “kawaii” I just loved it! I knew she would do great cosplays and I was right. I have seen her in a few and loved them all! I reached out to her so that I could do an interview with her and she said yes!

Why did you start cosplaying

I started cosplaying last year when I finally got the courage to do it. I love it, I love being the characters I see in Anime who give me the chills and the love that I get when I see them on screen. To be my favorite person Is amazing. It’s a thrill, I’m so glad I could finally bring my imagination to life.

I’ve seen you do anime and comic book characters, which is your favorite to play

I would say I love to cosplay Anime more, but I love cosplaying comic characters and making them look like anime characters; it’s fun to combine the two. Anime is my passion but I do love marvel and DC like everyone else. I like cosplaying the less known comic characters, it’s fun!

Who’s your favorite character you have portrayed as of yet

I would have to say Ms. Marvel, she was wonderful, I kept to afro and I fell in love with her even more. I got the most feedback from her as well, so I really adore her <3.

Do you have a website or blog that you share your characters

I have my Facebook and Instagram which anyone can find me by searching for BreeSenpai

Do you make your own costumes

No I haven’t yet, however I have altered some cosplays and am working on. Something for my first time it’s a little scary but I know it will be okay, it’s fun to have something to do all the time.

How do your friends and family feel about your past time

My family and friends were the ones who pushed me to do this! I think it amazing that my family knew about something I would love to do before me. They have always encouraged my love for Anime.

Have you ever been bullied because of what you do? If so, how have you dealt with it

Hmm, no I don’t really think so, someone did think it was odd that I was showing myself and asked if I was doing it for attention and if my boyfriend was okay with it. And I replied “I do this for me, I love every moment, of what I do, I feel happy about it and my boyfriend loves me for me, and supports me in everything I do. He even takes my pictures haha”.

What would you give as advice to someone who wants to start cosplaying

I would say just do it, it’s a wonderful experience to be a character that you see on the big screen. To make something your own. Start small and just be happy. I started with amazon and eBay and I may not be “big” now but I know one day I will get there. It think it’s always good to stay positive as well!
